Biography
Suneeti is a Metallurgist by background and is working at CSIRO in the green-steel group of Mineral resources business unit since February 2020. She has extensive research experience and knowledge in high temperature experimentation, iron ore agglomeration, ironmaking, material characterization, thermodynamic modelling, mass and energy balance analysis, kinetic evaluation, and emission analysis. Prior to joining CSIRO, Suneeti completed a CSIRO co-supported PhD at the Swinburne University of Technology, during which she invented a novel low carbon-footprint iron ore agglomeration process for Australia’s vastly under-utilised magnetite ores, called Lime Magnetite Pellet (LMP) Process. After successfully demonstrating the concept at the laboratory scale during her PhD, she has now completed pilot scale tests at CSIRO. The test results indicate LMP as a suitable feedstock for ironmaking. She has also conducted emission analysis, techno-economic modelling, and flowsheet development to understand the feasibility of its scale-up and commercialization. Currently, she is testing the LMP process for low-grade goethite-rich Australian iron ores.
Suneeti has also conducted fundamental research on solar agglomeration and solar smelting of iron ores. What makes this research particularly attractive is that many of Australia’s iron ore mines are located in regions with extremely high solar flux. Suneeti has worked on projects involving, FMG, Roy Hill, Liberty, as well as for the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER). Suneeti’s involvement in these projects was in (a) conducting emissions modelling to evaluate the net CO2 emissions across the steelmaking value chain and (b) accessing the impact of lower iron ore quality on future H2 steelmaking processes. The work identifies major opportunities for Scope-3 emission reduction from Australia’s iron ore industry. Suneeti is currently leading a HILT CRC (Heavy Industry Low Carbon Transition - Cooperative Research Centres) project from CSIRO’s side which is aimed at accessing the impact of low-grade Australian ore pellets on the future H2 gas-based ironmaking processes. In the near future, Suneeti is looking forward to collaborating with Indian Institutions under the India-Australia Green Steel Partnership program that can benefit both nations to reduce their carbon footprints from the steelmaking value chain.
Suneeti was a recipient of Swinburne HDR Publication Award 2019 for publishing several high impact research articles and patents during her PhD studies. She was also the winner of AMP’s Amplify Ignite 2019 PhD student pitching competition for her initiative to revolutionize the steel making industry with concentrated solar energy. Suneeti is also interested in the critical materials research and has conducted preliminary research on pyrometallurgical processing of monazite. Apart from her scientific research, Suneeti has a passion for painting.
